This survey is for landholders on the Nullaki Peninsula that are taking part in the WICC 1080 baiting program.
WICC has been 1080 baiting on the Nullaki Peninsula since 2017. We have had 4 successive grant programs that have been covering the costs of baiting, camera monitoring and fence upgrades for the purpose of protecting native fauna on the inside of the fence. In 2017 we did not have any evidence of Western Ringtail Possums on the Nullaki, however wesuspected they were there. We now see WRP regularly on our cameras on baited properties. We are confident that 1080 baiting, along with significant volunteer efforts, has had very positive outcomes for your native wildlife out there.
The latest round of funding for Nullaki baiting was from the Australian Government for the purpose of protecting your local WRP. This funding came via South Coast Natural Resource Management (SCNRM) (2019 - 2023) under the National Landcare Program's Regional Landcare Partnership (RLP). The RLP program expired on 30 June 2023. SCNRM was unfortunately NOT successful in their bid to the Australian Government to secure further RLP (2023 - 2028) funding for the Nullaki.
Since June 2023 WICC has continued to pay for baiting three times per year on the Nullaki, as we still had some unspent RLP funding and the WICC board agreed that we should expend the remainder of these funds on the Nullaki baiting program while we looked for alternative funding sources. Ecologists have advised us that once you get fox numbers down you do not want to let up on your baiting or they will quickly bounce back up. Unfortunately we have been unsuccessful in securing further 1080 baiting funding. It has always been difficult in landcare to continue to get grants for the same services. Funding providers like new initiatives, not the funding of existing ones.
The board has requested that if landholders wish to continue 1080 baiting on the Nullaki (and I sincerely hope they do) that these costs are met by the landholder after the next baiting round in September. WICC will continue to look for grant opportunities to cover the future 1080 baiting.
To assist Nullaki landholders we are happy to continue to organise the baiting on your behalf, which includes organising your contractor and issuing the required landholder baiting notifications which go out before each baiting event.
We are currently paying for your existing 1080 baiting contractor (Gavern House) who is on your permit, to bait the nearby Eungedup wetlands under a Birdlife funded program. This means we have Gavern down here four times per year (Feb / June / Sept / Dec). Because we have already paid for Gavern's mobilisation he was able to provide a very reasonable quote of $119 plus GST to continue baiting your property. You can join on any one (or all) of the 4 annual baiting rounds. Gavern suggests at a minimum that you do 2 per year (autumn and spring). You can change the frequency of your baiting at any time. Either WICC or Gavern House will invoice you following each baiting round.
If you could take a couple minutes to complete the survey below it would be most appreciated. Thanks. Shaun.
