Healthy Estuaries WA #2 aims to improve water quality and restore balance in key estuaries across regional WA. It continues the work of previous programs and is backed by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions.
The program focuses on seven at-risk estuaries, including Peel-Harvey, Leschenault, Vasse-Geographe, Hardy Inlet, Wilson Inlet, Torbay Inlet, and Oyster Harbour. It promotes collaboration between communities, scientists, government, and industry to reduce nutrient pollution and protect waterways.
Key Strategies:
People & Partnerships – Strengthening collaboration among government, community, farmers, and Traditional Owners for long-term catchment management.
Sustainable Agriculture – Supporting farmers with improved fertiliser use, dairy effluent management, and best-practice techniques.
Water in the Landscape – Reducing nutrient run-off by restoring streams, fencing waterways, and creating local jobs.
Innovative Remediation – Testing new technologies like soil amendments and phosphorus-binding clays to manage nutrients.
Science for Management – Using research and monitoring to guide effective estuary management.
This program takes a coordinated, science-based approach to protecting WA’s estuaries for the future
